Professional development takes many forms. While formal training plays an important role, development and growth also occur through experiences that extend beyond the usual responsibilities of a role. Contributing to a working group or committee, mentoring a colleague, improving a process, or participating in a new initiative can all help to build skills, strengthen confidence, and develop knowledge.

We're delighted to introduce a brand new UKTMN resource for sharing experiences: Beyond the day-to-day. 

We aim to showcase the variety of experiences and opportunities which have helped to develop trial management professionals via short case studies. The experiences may be beyond the usual daily tasks undertaken, but are relevant to the role and help to support professional development. 

You are invited to share your experiences via a short online form (linked below). The form asks questions about your experience, the benefits to your development, things that challenged you and any advice to others. 

Examples of beyond the day-to-day activities may include:

  • Serving on ethics or trial committees
  • Being involved in groups within your organisation
  • Leading/working on a SWAT/methodological research
  • Mentoring
  • Teaching on short courses and degree courses
  • Secondment to other units/teams
  • Fellowship experiences
  • Public speaking at conferences or careers events
  • Participation in funding panels
  • Supervising student projects or internships
  • Peer review for journal/publications

We invite UKTMN members to share any examples of activities you have undertaken outside your day-to-day role that have supported your professional development, which may include things not listed here. By sharing your experience, you can inspire others, highlight opportunities for growth, and demonstrate the diverse ways in which trial management professionals gain knowledge and expertise.
