Almost half of trials fail to achieve their follow up target. Follow up is particularly challenging in trials involving young people and on sensitive topics, with reports of less than 50% return rate for postal STI samples in young people in previous trials.

Safetxt, a study of a sexual health intervention, recruited 6250 participants aged 16-24 from 52 UK sexual health sites. Participants were sent a follow up questionnaire at 4 weeks, and a follow up questionnaire and STI test at 1 year.

In April 2020, 87.81% participants returned the 4 week questionnaire, 79.1% returned the 1 year questionnaire and 73.48% returned the 1 year postal STI test. We will discuss the strategies used to improve follow up rates in the study.
