The recruitment and retention of patients are significant methodological challenges for clinical trials. Whilst research has predominantly focussed on recruitment, the failure to retain recruited patients and collect outcome data can lead to additional problems and potentially biased results. Participant withdrawal and loss to follow are the most frequently reported causes of attrition yet very little research has focussed on participant’s awareness and understanding of the importance of retention.

We reviewed a cohort of Patient information leaflets (PIL) along with their corresponding protocols to identify how withdrawal, retention and the value of outcome data collection is described during the consent process. This webinar will discuss the current imbalance of PIL content along with short, simple ways to begin readdressing this.
